Glendale Educator H. Rex Craig Dies

H. Rex Craig, president of Glendale Community College and superintendent of the Glendale Community College District, died of cancer Saturday in a Glendale hospital.

Craig, 47, was the first Glendale college administrator to hold dual responsibilities as college president and district superintendent after the school broke away from the Glendale Unified School District in 1982.

Born in Garden Valley, Ida., Craig began his career as a high school biology teacher in 1959 in Denver. He also taught at a community college there before beginning an administrative career at a Greeley, Colo., college. He later moved to Omaha.

He came to California in 1977 to become president of Contra Costa Community College in San Pablo and was named president of Glendale Community College in 1982.

Craig served as a member of the California Assn. of Community Colleges’ Commission on Public Relations, the state Chancellor’s Task Force on Credentialing and the Assn. of California Community College Administrators.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; a son, Kirby; a daughter, Kira; his mother, four brothers and a sister.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Grandview Presbyterian Church in Glendale. The family suggests donations to the Glendale College Foundation or the Boy Scouts of America, Verdugo Hills Council.
