The Florida Parole and Probation Commission recommended that Gov. Bob Graham and the Cabinet not commute the sentence of Roswell Gilbert, who said he killed his ailing wife to end her misery. Graham and the Cabinet have scheduled a clemency hearing Thursday for Gilbert, 76, who is serving a life sentence, which carries a mandatory minimum of 25 years in prison. The recommendation by the parole commission is non-binding. Gilbert was convicted of first-degree murder for the March 4 shooting of his wife, Emily. He said she begged him to end her suffering from a painful bone disease and progressive senility.
