The mayor and vice mayor of the northeast Chinese city of Yichun have been punished for failing to prevent a May 23 blaze that gutted the homes of thousands of families. The Communist Party newspaper People’s Daily reported that the fire caused about $7.24 million worth of property damage, making it one of the biggest blazes ever reported in China. The Heilongjiang provincial government gave official warnings and demerits to Mayor Nie Binglin and Vice Mayor Yang Fuxing for negligence in ignoring fire hazards in the city.
