The Lomita City Council voted unanimously this week to close a walkway between Via Vera and Palos Verdes Drive North in response to complaints from neighbors.

The city opened the walkway in 1970 to help children get to and from school. Neighbors said the walkway has become a youth hangout and complained of incidents of vandalism, theft and noise. Residents presented photos showing broken bottles, beer cans and graffiti.

In other action, the council suspended an ordinance against fortune-telling, pending a state Supreme Court ruling on the constitutionality of a similar ordinance in Azusa.

The council also welcomed 14 high school students from Takaishi, Japan, who arrived Aug. 1 for a three-week visit. Takaishi is Lomita’s sister city.
