In an attempt to curb liquor sales to minors, plainclothes deputies of the Norwalk Sheriff’s Station will conduct sporadic “sting” operations at area liquor stores in coming months, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
In such an operation last month, two plainclothes deputies accompanied an 18-year-old community services officer into 13 liquor stores in the Southeast area and watched while the 18-year-old tried to purchase beer. (Community services officers ages 18 to 23 are hired by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to take reports on minor crimes and otherwise assist deputies.) Sale of liquor is illegal in California to persons under age 21.
The deputies issued citations for sale of liquor to minors at Liquor Land in Whittier; Bob’s Liquor, La Mirada Liquor and Harvey’s Market in La Mirada; E & M Liquor in Santa Fe Springs and Sandbar Liquor in Norwalk.
The owner of Harvey’s Market was also cited for allowing a minor to sell liquor without supervision.
