Conservancy to Buy Verdugos Property

Hillside property in the Verdugo Mountains once earmarked for a landfill will be purchased next month by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy for use as open space and hiking trails.

The conservancy board on Tuesday night approved the purchase of 1,010 acres in La Tuna Canyon, west of Sun Valley, for $1.25 million.

The land is being sold by BBK Corp., which bought the property in 1978 for use as a landfill.

BBK abandoned the landfill plan when it ran into strenuous opposition from neighbors.

Joseph T. Edmiston, the conservancy’s executive director, said that, with the close of escrow on the BBK parcel next month, “About one-third of the Verdugo Mountains will be in public ownership, including the entire north face.”

Besides the conservancy, a state agency, the cities of Los Angeles and Glendale own large sections of parkland in the mountains.
