Ship With 2,500 Cars Is Ablaze Off Alaska

JUNEAU, Alaska —
A Japanese ship carrying 2,500 new vehicles for U.S. buyers was “seaworthy but dead in the water” south of the Aleutians as crew members fought to isolate a fire burning out of control in the bowels of the vessel, a Coast Guard pilot said Wednesday.
Lt. Cmdr. John Odom III, who commanded the Coast Guard C-130 transport dispatched to help the Coral Ace, said its 24-member crew appeared to be in good shape and ready to abandon ship if necessary.
