Gross and Friedrichs Win Again in European Swim Championships

Capturing his second gold medal in as many days, West Germany’s Michael Gross won the 100-meter butterfly event at the European Swimming Championships Wednesday.

Gross was timed in 54.02 seconds, but he was pressed by Britain’s Andrew Jameson, who was second in 54.30. Third was Marcel Gery of Czechoslovakia in 54.86.

Gross is the reigning European and Olympic champion in the event. The 21-year-old West German had won Tuesday in the 200-meter freestyle.

East Germany’s Elke Friedrichs won the women’s 200-meter freestyle in 1:59.55 to match’ Gross’ two-day medal tally.

Bulgaria’s Tanya Bogomilova provided the upset of the day, edging East Germany’s Sylvia Gerasch to win the 200-meter women’s breaststroke in 2:28.57. Gerasch, at 2:29.02, was followed in third by fellow-East German Silke Hoerner in 2:29.83.

Tamas Darany won the men’s 400-meter medley in 4:20.70. The 17-year-old Hungarian was followed by Vagim Jaroschuk of the Soviet Union in 4:21.54.
