Commission Members Steeped in Government, Community Service

Here are thumbnail sketches of the 12 members serving on the Orange County Commission on the Status of Women. There are three vacancies on the 15-member commission.

Janie Arnold: Appointed July, 1981, by Supervisor Thomas Riley. Legislative aide to state Sen. Marian Bergeson (R-Newport Beach), consultant and grant writer; runs part-time catering business.

Bonnie Castrey: Appointed December, 1983, by Supervisor Harriett Wieder. Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service commissioner, negotiated an end to the 1984 Disneyland strike; formed an Orange County chapter of the Industrial Relations Research Assn.; former nurse.

Carol Downey: Appointed July, 1984, by Supervisor Bruce Nestande. Teacher at John Tynes Elementary School, Placentia; school representative and member of the executive board of Placentia Unified Education Assn.

Mary Ann Jarvis: Appointed last June by Riley. Director of Volunteer Services and Public Relations Liaison, Brea Community Hospital.

Judith A. Perez: Appointed May, 1982, by Supervisor Roger Stanton. Active in handling grievances and testifying on legislation for Communications Workers of America; vice president, Orange County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO; delegate to 1984 Democratic National Convention.

Margaret Ramsey: Appointed February, 1983, by Stanton. Liaison, Santa Ana School District; president, Orange County Council for Better Education; secretary, Orange County Black Historical Commission; playwright.

Sister Michaela Rock: Appointed October, 1983, by Supervisor Ralph Clark. Vice president for human development, St. Joseph Hospital, Orange; on the board of trustees of Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital; Kiwanis Clubs of Santa Ana, Education for the Handicapped Committee.

Carol South: Appointed January, 1984, by Riley. Carol South Associates community relations; first woman president, Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce; president, Volunteer Center of Orange County; first vice president, Braille Institute Auxiliary of Orange Coast; vice president, Charter 100 (women of achievement).

Haydee Velazquez Tillotson: Appointed September, 1984, by Wieder. Interior designer; formed own interior design firm for residential and commercial projects; on the board of directors of the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce; chairperson, Huntington Harbor Philharmonic Committee.

Shirley Walton: Appointed last June by Wieder. Acting director, Volunteer Center of Orange County West; chairperson, County Government Relations Committee, United Way.

J. Carol Winn: Appointed last July by Clark. Free-lance writer, with recent articles on the Olympics and electronic text management; former teacher of emotionally ill, physically ill and terminally ill teen-agers for Orange schools.

Mary Yunt: Appointed November, 1982, by Nestande. First woman field representative for the State Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO; secretary-treasurer, Orange County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO; commissioned Kentucky colonel.
