The Irvine Co. remains opposed to drag boat racing at Irvine Lake--where a 9-year-old girl was killed in an April racing accident--despite a move by promoters to resume racing there, company officials said. Irvine boat owners will ask the Orange County Planning Commission on Aug. 19 to lift its revocation of lake racing permits. But even if the commission reinstates the permit, the promoters would have to gain further approval from the Irvine Co., which owns the lake front property. Ron Hooven, the Irvine Co.’s commercial land lease manager, said the company continues to oppose drag racing.
