Some Fireworks Plants to Undergo Federal Inspection

The Labor Department, citing concern over worker safety following two fatal manufacturing explosions, said last week that it will inspect all fireworks plants with 10 or more employees during the next year.

Labor Secretary William E. Brock III said that the deaths of 30 persons in accidents at two fireworks plants this year “demands that this industry be subjected to close scrutiny by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.” Brock said the inspections would be conducted by next July 4.

Brock said such plants previously have not been the object of frequent OSHA inspections because of a lower-than-average injury rate.
