Marwah Named President of Cultural Commission

Dr. Amarjit S. Marwah has been elected president, and Velma Marsh Taylor, vice president, of the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission, a division of the city’s Cultural Affairs Department.

Marwah, a commission member since 1981, is a dental surgeon. He has published numerous scientific articles and has been a guest lecturer at UCLA and Bombay University in India, where he completed his preliminary medical education. He was named good-will ambassador to the United States by the Indian government in 1980.

Taylor has been a commission member since 1974 and served as vice president from 1982-84 and as president from 1984-85. She spent 38 years with the Los Angeles Unified School System and retired in 1980 as a specialist working with handicapped children.

The Cultural Heritage Commission, one of the first historic preservation agencies in the nation, was created by the city in 1962 to identify and preserve buildings and structures that are part of the history of Los Angeles. Thus far, the commission has declared 294 historic-cultural monuments in Los Angeles.
