Police shot and fatally wounded a gunman who had seriously injured one man and held another hostage for nearly five hours today at the Paris Mosque, police said. The hostage escaped unharmed and police fired because they considered the gunman’s behavior “threatening,” Police Chief Alain Cances said. No police were injured.

Police said the man, who was not immediately identified, had a rifle and demanded to speak with a representative of the Algerian Embassy. They said he also asked that a car be brought to take him to Orly airport and that a plane be readied to take him to Algiers, the Algerian capital.
