The state is warning insurance companies against surcharging motorists for liability coverage for the sole reason that they have never before had such coverage. The state Department of Insurance said that it had received complaints from motorists who are seeking liability coverage for the first time in order to comply with the new insurance law. Under the new law, any motorist being cited for any other violation may also be asked for evidence of liability coverage or other financial responsibility. Failure to have it can mean a fine or a driver’s license suspension.
