Orthodox Jewish educators in Israel have agreed to allow “get-acquainted” contacts between their students and Arab students, despite concern on the part of some Orthodox Jews that such contacts could lead to intermarriage. The visits will be allowed on condition that only upperclassmen participate, that the sexes meet separately and that the visits be scholastic rather than social. Previously. officials had sought to limit such contacts among religious Jews to adults. Jewish religious students make up 21% of Israel’s school population.
