A list of the 71 most polluted ground water sites in Silicon Valley was released by state water officials to help identify high-risk areas for clean-up. The first three companies on the list were Solvent Service Co. in east San Jose, International Business Machines Corp. in south San Jose and Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corp. in south San Jose. The state Regional Water Quality Control Board plans to use the rankings to evaluate the risk level of new sites and to facilitate cleaning up of existing ones, many of which were polluted with solvents that leaked from underground storage tanks. Milpitas and south San Jose were pinpointed as areas most vulnerable to the quick spread of ground water contamination.
