Academy Award-winning producer-director Frank Capra, who suffered a series of small strokes Sunday, is now in fair condition and improving, officials at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage said. The 88-year-old film maker won Oscars for the 1934 film “It Happened One Night” and the 1938 film “You Can’t Take It With You.” He also directed such motion pictures as “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,” “Meet John Doe,” “Lost Horizon” and “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Capra is a resident of La Quinta, near Palm Springs.
