San Diego State’s Day, Hill Play Waiting Game

What duties will former San Diego State athletic director Mary Alice Hill perform as assistant to the president? When will Hill report to her new position? Will she even report?

Just as there have been no explanations for Hill’s firing Thursday, there don’t appear to be any answers to the questions regarding her future at the university.

Since the principals--SDSU President Thomas Day and Hill--will be out of town for the rest of the work week, there probably won’t be any answers until Monday.

“When they (Hill and her attorney) were in my office (on Thursday),” Day said, “I said, ‘Call me and I’ll discuss it.’ She hasn’t been in touch with me. If she gets in touch with me, we’ll discuss it.”

Day said it is only common courtesy that he discuss the matter with Hill before discussing it with the press. Day is leaving today for Washington, D.C., where he’ll be sworn in as a member of the National Science Board. He will be back in the office Monday.

Hill is attending a session of the NCAA Council in Boston.

J. Stacey Sullivan, Hill’s attorney, said he is waiting for Day to tell them of Hill’s status.

“He has not yet told her what her reassignment is,” Sullivan said. “I don’t even know if she has an office. No sense reporting unless you know where to report.”

Sullivan said he is still trying to digest a lot of documents to help determine what Hill’s rights are and what her next step should be.
