The City Council voted 3 to 1--over the objection of Mayor Jack Wood--to appropriate a total of $10,000 for the defense of City Clerk Kathleen Reviczky in a court battle involving a special election on a proposed beachfront hotel.

The council last month authorized $5,000 for Reviczky’s defense of a lawsuit brought by resident Michael Escalante on behalf of the hotel developers, Greenwood & Langlois. The developers have challenged Reviczky’s handling of ballots from the June special election. The proposed $31-million hotel lost by two votes.

Reviczky said at the City Council meeting Tuesday that private legal bills had already exceeded $7,000. City Atty. James P. Lough has not represented Reviczky because of a conflict of interest.

Wood, who has publicly criticized Reviczky’s handling of the election, questioned the legal aid and opposed the additional allocation.
