The City Council has instructed the city recreation and parks director to solicit bids from companies to operate a bus system for riders within Monterey Park. The buses would run on five routes, designed to take residents to local stores and offices and connect with bus lines operated by the Southern California Rapid Transit District and the city of Montebello. Passengers would ride free, with the estimated $300,000 annual cost coming from the county sales tax for transportation. City Manager Lloyd de Llamas said the city hopes to put the bus system in operation in six to eight months.
