Smoking Ban Takes Effect: Brea residents can no longer legally smoke in public places indoors and in areas of some restaurants. The new ordinance took effect Thursday. Approved by City Council members last month, the ordinance prohibits smoking in indoor public areas and restricts smoking in restaurants that seat more than 50 people. While not regulating private offices, city officials asked the Brea Chamber of Commerce to develop its own proposal for the workplace. The chamber report is expected by the end of October. In the meantime, officials said they do not expect police to seek out violators but, instead, enforce the law as residents file complaints.
