A former late-night disc jockey for country music radio station KLAC was convicted Thursday of pandering charges for trying to recruit a 26-year-old listener and her 7-year-old daughter to perform sex acts in pornographic films.

Carlton (Corky) Mayberry, 46, who will be sentenced by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Roberta Ralph on Sept. 18, held the off-the-air discussions, one of which was taped by police, on a call-in request line between his introduction of songs and reading of commercials and public service announcements.

After the verdict, Mayberry, who now works as an office manager for a doctor, said, “I’m just in a state of shock right now.”

During his four-day trial, Mayberry testified that the woman had called him many times and had discussed her sexual fantasies. Mayberry said he was “just playing along” and had no intent to commit a crime.

But Deputy Dist. Atty. John Fisher said the taped conversation, which was made after the woman contacted police, told a different story.

“The evidence showed,” he said, “that the defendant engaged in conversations with (the Hawaiian Gardens woman) where the defendant solicited her to have herself and her daughter, whose age is 7, do pornographic movies for money.”

Mayberry, who described himself as a “middleman” for pornographic film makers, according to a transcript of the tape, was arrested after subsequently meeting at the radio station with an undercover officer who posed as the woman.

Fisher called four witnesses, including the Hawaiian Gardens woman, during the trial.

Mayberry, convicted of separate counts of pandering, attempted pandering and soliciting another person to commit lewd acts with a child, faces three to eights years in prison for the pandering conviction, Fisher said.
