Canoga Park Robber Gets 7 Years

After three trials on the same charges, a 29-year-old Canoga Park man was sentenced Thursday to seven years in state prison for the 1984 armed robbery of a bartender at the Valley Hilton in Sherman Oaks.

Jon C. Bobier was arrested Feb. 29, 1984, in connection with the Hilton robbery and an armored-truck robbery two weeks later in the parking lot of a Panorama City grocery store.

His first trial ended in a hung jury in November, 1984. In the second trial, Bobier was convicted of the two robberies and of assault with a deadly weapon, but a new trial was granted when his attorney, James E. Blatt, complained that he had been denied a transcript of the first trial.

A third jury found Bobier guilty Aug. 6, 1985, of the Hilton armed robbery, but jurors deadlocked on the other two counts. Superior Court Commissioner Alan Haber dismissed those counts Thursday at the request of the district attorney’s office.

Bobier was sentenced last year to 16 months in prison for attempting to escape while in custody in March, 1984. Blatt said Bobier has completed that sentence while awaiting the disposition of his case.
