A CHANGE OF HABIT

A while back, Calendar caught up with actress Ann Savage, the legendary diabolical slattern in “Detour,” the 1945 Edgar Ulmer film noir favorite. Her Vera won her nothing in the way of “nice girl” parts and she remained a B-movie “dame” until she abandoned acting.

Now, 20 years after “Detour,” she returns to the screen . . . as a nun.

Savage, 65, appears as Sister Harriet, a Catholic girls’ school teacher in Paramount Pictures’ “Captive Hearts,” a youth-oriented drama now filming in British Columbia. According to casting director Jackie Burch, director Duncan Gibbons read the article on Savage and screened “Detour.” “Duncan wanted to bring her back to the screen,” Burch said, admitting, “Of course, it was hysterical trying to judge her as a nun from the picture.”

Enthused Savage from Vancouver: “I’m just so delighted! Here I am for the first time playing a very decent, quite stern, person.”
