HEART & MINDLESS

In what must go down in pop music history as one of the most idiotic comments a “comeback” artist can make, Ann Wilson of Heart says: “Singers lose that cutting edge when they get too happy. Look at Paul McCartney. He’s too content. That edge is gone” (“Ann Wilson and Her Resuscitated Heart,” by Dennis Hunt, Aug. 11).

Smart move, Ann. You haven’t had so much as a sonic belch on the chart in half a decade and you attack pop music’s undisputed best-selling composer of all time.

And who buys these McCartney records without the “edge”? The record buying public. And who will buy Heart albums in the years to come? The same 30 or so people who bought their last four albums.

Some Capitol records A&R; man/woman isn’t do his/her job. One doesn’t gain mass acceptance by badmouthing a favorite of the masses.

As Wilson puts it: “To hell with the music.” To hell with that pop music “powerhouse” Heart. It’s just hard to truly believe someone who claims to have this “edge” when they make appearances on “Solid Gold.”
