A ferry strike at this English Channel port stranded thousands of tourists Friday.

By noon, about 700 cars, 70 campers and 30 buses were lined up at Dover’s eastern docks. Police were called to help unsnarl a huge traffic jam that spilled outside the dock gates onto nearby roads.

The strike by officers on the Townsend-Thoresen line over pay differentials affected service on 12 ferries. The action was to last one day, but Press Assn., the British domestic news agency, quoted union sources as saying the strike could continue for 48 more hours.
