New Penalty Trial Ordered in Deaths of 3 Teen-Agers

A second Los Angeles County jury will decide whether to put to death Mauricio Silva, a parolee convicted of killing three teen-agers within weeks of his release from prison last year.

Superior Court Judge Douglas McKee on Monday ordered a Sept. 10 hearing to select a new penalty trial date.

A mistrial was declared when the jury voted 7 to 5 in favor of death. Silva, 24, faces either death or life in prison without the possibility of parole for two shotgun slayings and the strangulation of his half-sister.
