A Sun Valley man who raped his former girlfriend’s mother after choking her unconscious pleaded guilty Wednesday to rape, oral copulation and assault charges.

Andy W. Baca, 22, pleaded guilty to three felony counts before San Fernando Superior Court Judge Robert D. Fratianne in return for the dismissal of two additional charges and an agreement that he be ordered to serve only 12 years in state prison when he appears for sentencing on Oct. 24.

Baca could have been sentenced to up to 25 years if convicted on all five counts, Deputy Dist. Atty. Kenneth Loveman said.

According to police Detective Gary Barthelmess, Baca had been living with his girlfriend and her parents at the family’s North Hollywood home until several weeks before the attack. After he and his girlfriend broke up, Baca moved out of the house but remained “on decent, speaking terms” with the girl’s parents, occasionally visiting her mother at the house.

But, on Dec. 3, 1984, Baca became violent while visiting the woman, breaking her nose and jaw before choking her with a rope.

“He went from a quiet, sullen-type mood to choking her unconscious,” Loveman said after Baca entered the plea. “When she came to, he was raping her and he asked her if she knew who was doing this to her.”

To placate Baca, the woman told him she did not know who he was. After the attack, Baca called the woman’s husband, his former girlfriend and paramedics, telling all of them that he had just arrived at the house and had discovered that “something terrible has happened,” Loveman said.

The woman identified Baca as her attacker as soon as officers took her out of the house, Loveman said.

Baca, who lives with his parents in Sun Valley, remains free on $25,000 bail.
