Rare Illness Fatal to Girl, 8, After Swim

ORLANDO, Fla. —
Health officials are stepping up their monitoring of lakes and warning parents of the dangers of a rare disease after an 8-year-old girl died of an amoebic infection caught while swimming.
Billie Jo Nobles died in a Gainesville hospital Tuesday of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, authorities said. The girl went swimming last Wednesday, became seriously ill Saturday and slipped into a coma Monday.
