Almost 900 residents in Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach lost electrical power for about one minute Monday night when a wire from the Southern California Edison plant was engulfed in flames from a stunt explosion for the television show “Riptide.”

The fire hit the wire at 6:50 p.m. when a Cadillac limousine was blown up as part of a chase scene for the NBC-TV series, according to John Cawdrey, operations supervisor for Edison.

Cawdrey said the fire from the explosion went across a 16,000-volt line, causing the residents to lose power. He said the wire received only minor damage.

The television crew had permission from the city to explode the car on the 1200 block of North Francisca Avenue, which runs directly behind the Edison plant, Redondo Police Sgt. Paul Rossiter said.

“Riptide” crews often film in Redondo, particularly at King Harbor, but Rossiter said it was the first time a car was blown up in the city. No one was injured, Rossiter said.
