Jail Air Conditioning Voted: To eliminate what are described as “almost unbearable conditions” in the City Jail, City Council members have approved the purchase of an air conditioner for the floor that houses inmates. The $8,000 slated for the purchase originally was allocated for an energy conservation measure--a light-dimming system--in the main library. City Council members approved the transfer of the money on Tuesday. The lack of air conditioning “ on the second floor of the jail creates almost unbearable conditions during extremely hot or humid weather,” according to a staff report. To avoid possible claims by inmates of “inhumane treatment,” city staff members recommended cooling the second floor. The first floor, where inmates are processed, already has air conditioning. But relief for inmates may not come before summer’s end. According to city regulations, the project first must be put out for bid--which will take at least two weeks--before any contract can be signed and installation work can begin.
