The Tennessee Valley Authority is shutting down the Sequoyah nuclear power plant indefinitely, citing concerns over key emergency safety equipment, the TVA announced Wednesday.

The shutdown will leave the federal agency without nuclear-generated electricity. TVA has already closed one nuclear plant and has delayed seeking licensing on its third because of safety problems.

“I view this action as consistent with TVA’s safety-first operating policy, and I have so informed the TVA board today,” said Hugh G. Parris, the TVA’s nuclear chief.

Plant officials have begun shutting down Unit 2 at the plant outside Chattanooga, and both units should be in cold shutdown by Friday afternoon, Parris said.
