The number of acquired immune deficiency syndrome cases diagnosed in Austria appeared to be doubling every six months, and more than half the 23 victims reported so far have died from the disease, the Health Ministry said Wednesday.

It said 13 of the 23 cases were fatal. “It seems that the number of stricken people doubles every six months,” a ministry spokeswoman added.

AIDS, which has mainly affected homosexual men, blood transfusion recipients and needle-using drug addicts, destroys resistance to infection.
