Malibu
The Malibu Community Center has gone public, changing its status from private, nonprofit corporation to community services district, which will be part of the state government.
The Board of Supervisors formed the Point Dume Community Services District on Tuesday. About 980, or 80%, of the registered voters in the Point Dume area had signed a petition supporting establishment of the district.
The district will not levy taxes, but will have access to surplus public property; will have an advantage over private groups in applying for government grants, and might have its property taxes reduced or eliminated, center director Kristin Reynolds has said.
Reynolds said she hopes the district will be able to expand the center’s recreational programs and establish more services for youth and senior citizens.
The district’s board of directors has been appointed by Supervisor Deane Dana, whose 4th District includes Malibu.
