Los Angeles County supervisors voted to halt distribution of a controversial pamphlet designed to alert intravenous drug users to the dangers of acquired immune deficiency syndrome and to investigate how the brochure, entitled “Shooting Up and Your Health,” came to be printed with $1,600 in county funds. The supervisors also voted to have county drug abuse officials prepare a brochure to replace it. Supervisor Kenneth Hahn was angered when the original brochure was brought to his attention, saying it “implies the official approval” of county government for illegal drug use. County health officials said only 200 copies of the pamphlet were distributed to drug treatment centers and distribution of the remaining 25,000 pamphlets has been discontinued.
