Vehicle theft in California has increased 12% since last year and the most popular targets are Toyota and Nissan pickup trucks, the Highway Patrol reported. There were 87,898 vehicle thefts in the first six months of this year compared with 78,774 for the same period in 1984, the CHP said.
Thefts of trucks increased by 20% while those of recreational vehicles declined by 14%. Authorities recovered 88% of all stolen vehicles in the first half of this year, compared with 87% in 1984. But 38% of them had been stripped or wrecked, the CHP said.
