Bargainers for the Detroit public schools and the district’s 10,500 teachers resumed contract talks in hopes of averting a strike, but a union official said a walkout appears likely. John Elliott, president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, said he will recommend a strike at a meeting this morning. Detroit administrators recently received a 6% pay increase, but the teachers were offered “something less,” he said. The district’s 202,000 students are scheduled to start school Tuesday.
