Bennett Plays Teacher for a Day in 7th-Grade Civics
Education Secretary William J. Bennett, his coat off and shirt sleeves rolled up, returned to the schoolroom here today, teaching a 55-minute class in social studies to seventh-graders.
It was the first of eight such ventures back into the classroom scheduled this fall for the former college professor.
“I do this to pay tribute to the art of teaching, which is, of course, at the heart of the educational process,” Bennett said.
During the class at Caddo Middle Magnet School, Bennett praised a civic campaign that won a referendum for more money for schools.
Bennett plans to teach seven more classes at private and public schools from New Hampshire to California.
