The typhoon that swept through China's southeastern Fujian province last week killed 48 people, injured 329 and destroyed more than 5,000 homes, authorities said Tuesday. A Fujian provincial government spokesman, reached by telephone in Fuzhou, said Typhoon Nelson also sank 969 fishing boats and ruined about 178,500 acres of crops. It was described as China's worst storm in 16 years.
