Carrier Nimitz to Be Based in Everett, Wash.

WASHINGTON —
The home port of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Nimitz, with a battle support group of up to 15 warships, will be moved from Norfolk, Va., to Everett, Wash., by 1991, Navy Secretary John F. Lehman Jr. announced Thursday.
Construction of the home port site is expected to begin next year, contingent on congressional authorization and appropriations, Lehman said.
