Dutch divers have found the wreck of a World War I German submarine that sank in 1917 in the North Sea after hitting a British navy mine, the mayor of this northern Dutch island said Friday.

Mayor Eduard Haaksman said members of a diving club discovered the 165-foot long U-boat Monday at a depth of 60 feet, about 10 miles northwest of Terschelling.

He said information given by a British divers magazine pinpointing the location of the wreck, the UB 61, which sank on Nov. 29, 1917, when it hit a mine laid by a British destroyer. The U-boat’s 36 crew members where killed.
