Stumping for Laurel and Hardy

More than my displeasure at the rising costs of postage over the years is my sadness/amazement as to the postmaster general’s refusal to honor Laurel and Hardy on a postage stamp (“The Pictures on Our Postal Stamps” by Betty Cuniberti, Aug. 23).

In my opinion, lesser individuals have been so honored, and during the hard times of the Great Depression in America, these two comic “geniuses” brought laughs to people (those fortunate enough to have the admission . . . ) during a period when laughs were “very” difficult/impossible? to achieve!

I had the honor of having three visits with Stan Laurel at his Santa Monica apartment, and despite ill health he still retained his marvelous sense of humor . . . he even did his famous “crying” routine for me!

He showed me fan mail from all over the world, and they were President Tito of Yugoslavia’s personal favorites . . . he called them “the fat one and the thin one”!

I surely hope the postmaster general reconsiders, and I personally would pay an increase in postage for “their” stamp!
