Santa Ana : Council Will Take Up Disputed Traffic Plan
A controversial plan that officials say will decrease traffic in the north-central area of the city will be considered by the City Council tonight.
If the council goes along with staff recommendations, the following measures will be taken:
Flower Street will remain closed to southbound traffic between 6 and 9 a.m. and stop signs will be installed at Westwood Avenue and Memory Lane, the Flower Street off-ramp from the Santa Ana Freeway and Flower at North Park Boulevard. City staffers will also attempt to have Caltrans close the off-ramp.
In addition, plans to install traffic diverters on key streets will be abandoned and a request from residents of Greenleaf Street to erect a wall north of 17th Street will be rejected.
City studies indicate that the plan has decreased traffic in the neighborhood 12% overall and 22% during rush hours. A progress report will be made to the council next February.
Some residents said they would protest the plan today.
Arthur Donahue, an attorney and resident of Greenleaf Street, said residents had collected about $9,500 to pay for a wall to close off the street from customers of 17th Street businesses. “We are willing to pay for the whole thing,” he said.
