The City Council has approved by a 4-1 vote the sale of an 88,000-square-foot lot to car dealer Leon Peskin, who plans to open a Hyundai dealership at the corner of Main Street and Huntington Drive in Alhambra. The firm plans to sell the Hyundai Excel, a compact car imported from South Korea.

The council favored Peskin’s proposal over an application by Tindo Valley Associates to build a retail center on the site. Economic analysts had advised the council that the auto dealership would bring in $600,000 more in sales tax revenue over the next 15 years than the retail center. Peskin is awaiting final approval of building plans by the Planning Commission. The dealership is scheduled to open by Jan. 15.
