The City Council has accepted a proposal for developing three parcels of land owned by CalMat Co., formerly known as Conrock, one of Irwindale’s major rock quarrying industries. A 50-acre site on Ramona Avenue is slated for industrial development. Thirty-four new single family homes will be built on a second site, about 10 acres in Irwindale’s northwest corner. City Engineer Carlos Alvarado said the new homes will qualify as affordable housing, selling for between $70,000 and $80,000. The proposal also calls for construction of a large restaurant on a three-acre site on Irwindale Avenue. The developer may buy the site after leasing it for five years.

Irwindale expects to invest $1.5 million in streets and installing water, sewer and lighting facilities in connection with development of the three parcels. In exchange, CalMat will give some of its land to the Irwindale redevelopment agency. In accepting the proposal, Alvarado said the council was taking an informal first step toward approving the development projects.
