Signal Hill
The City Council is to hold a special meeting tonight to consider taking the first step toward developing a 33-acre auto mall.
Sitting as the Redevelopment Agency, the council will consider giving its staff permission to conduct an environmental review of the project.
In addition, the council will decide whether to negotiate further with a group of Long Beach auto dealers who want to move their firms to Signal Hill as part of the project.
City officials estimate the auto center, planned for a parcel at Spring Street and Cherry Avenue, would pump about $2 million in sales taxes into city coffers each year.
If the council gives the go-ahead during the 7 p.m. meeting at City Hall, it would be the “beginning step” of a lengthy process of reviews before the auto mall could be built, said Tim O’Donnell, assistant city manager.
