Dr. Joseph Brown, Diabetes Expert, Drowns
Dr. Joseph Brown, chief of endocrinology and a professor since 1966 at the UCLA School of Medicine, has drowned while swimming in Rio de Janeiro, it was learned this week.
Brown was 61 and was considered among the world’s leading researchers in diabetes and a pioneer in pancreatic transplants, said John Pontarelli, a UCLA spokesman.

Dr. Josiah Brown, a UCLA endocrinologist, was erroneously identified as Joseph Brown in an obituary in Friday’s Times. A memorial service for Dr. Brown will be held Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. at the UCLA Faculty Center.
He joined the UCLA faculty in 1955, becoming both professor of medicine and chief of endocrinology in 1966.
Brown, who died Aug. 30, is survived by his wife, Pearl, and three children.
