A Swiss foreign exchange student living in Encinitas was killed late Thursday and three people were injured when a pickup truck slammed into a van parked on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 5 near Las Pulgas Road.
The California Highway Patrol said Regina Hugli, 22, apparently was standing outside the van with two other passengers at about 10:50 p.m. when a pickup driven by Larry Bledsoe, 27, of Encinitas struck the van from behind and overturned.
Bledsoe was admitted to Tri-City Hospital in Oceanside with minor injuries, according to the CHP. He was in stable condition Friday.
Two others standing outside the van were injured in the collision. The van had pulled off the road when one of the passengers became ill, officers said.
