President Reagan, who kept his cool during two blisteringly hot days on the stump this week with the aid of hidden fans, finally took note of the East Coast heat wave Friday.

In a speech to Republican women state legislators in the State Dining Room--air conditioned but still a little warm--Reagan said that the muggy weather reminded him of a church service in his hometown during the dog days of summer.

The preacher, he said, promised “the shortest sermon we ever heard. He said just seven words: ‘If you think it’s hot now, wait.’ ”
