UCLA’s Ken Norton Jr. Stays Home

Share

Ken Norton Jr., sophomore linebacker at UCLA, was declared ineligible for today’s game and did not make the trip to Brigham Young. Early this summer, Norton appeared in a family photo in a J.C. Penney advertisement that included his father, the former heavyweight boxing champion, as a Father’s Day promotion. It is against National Collegiate Athletic Assn. rules for players to appear in any type of ad or commercial.

When UCLA learned of the ad, Norton, a reserve, was declared ineligible, and appeal proceedings were begun with the NCAA. Those appeals were not resolved before the team left for Provo, Utah, and Norton had to be left behind.

He will be eligible for the rest of UCLA’s games.
